Wind industry welcomes "unprecedented" performance

The National Grid has published its latest findings. The key significant finding is that wind power created more energy generation records. It now makes a significant contribution to the UK’s clean energy mix.

Wind energy has reached 24% of a daily share of the UK’s electricity needs, being a record high. The previous record was 22% in August. The share of electricity in the mix was 12.3% which superseded the 8% record and approaches the December personal best of 13%.

A peak half hour of supply was also reached. At the start of October the high recorded was 7,920 megawatts. The record has now reached 8,100 megawatts which is the equivalent to powering 17 million homes.

RenewableUK’s Director of External Affairs, Jennifer Webber, said: “These figures shine a light on the full extent of wind’s powerful performance over October; to beat nuclear for seven days straight, and 11 days overall in a month, is unprecedented. We saw August set new records for generation and October has followed hot on its heels”.
