UK and Scottish governments give CCS funding boost
The UK and Scottish Governments will provide funding of £4.2 million for industrial research and feasibility studies for a fill chain 570MW Carbon Capture & Storage solution together with coal-gasification power station in London.
The fund will be made up of £1.7 million from the Department of Energy and Climate Change and £2.5 million from the Scottish Government. It will allow the Seattle-based Summit Power Group to undertaking the research. The aim is to identify and design the proposed Caledonia Clean Energy Project and established its funding sources.
Ed Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change said:
“Carbon Capture and Storage could be crucial in helping us meet our ambitious climate change goals. The UK is one of the world’s frontrunners in this sector and the UK Government is leading Europe with its support of the two competition projects at Peterhead in Scotland and White Rose in Yorkshire.”
“Developing CCS more widely is vital if it is to become cost-competitive technology, and I’m excited at the prospect of Grangemouth contributing to the UK’s low carbon future.”
The programme of research will commence shortly and conclude in 18 months from now. The findings will be analyzed across the industry and academia to look at deployment of CCS on a commercial scale.
