THE UK’s FIRST ENERGY COMPANY TO SUPPLY RENEWABLE GREEN GAS TO ITS RESIDENTIAL & BUSINESS CUSTOMERS

GO 100% GREEN ENERGY WITH GREEN ENERGY UK

The independent energy supplier, Green Energy UK, has become the first company in the UK energy market to only supply renewable green gas to its residential and business customers. At no extra cost to its customers, Green Energy UK is the first UK energy company to supply 100% green energy - renewable electricity and renewable green gas.

Doug Stewart, Chief Executive of Green Energy UK said: “Supplying 100% renewable gas and electricity has always been an ambition for Green Energy UK and I’m delighted that we are the first energy supplier in the UK to offer green gas to our existing and new customers. Indeed, since we started offering duel fuel electricity and gas in 2014, many of our customers have been asking us to supply 100% green gas and so I’m delighted that we are now able to do so.”

“It is good news for our customers and green gas producers across the country. We are also doing our bit for the environment by not relying on fossil fuels for our energy supplies.”

The renewable green gas that Green Energy UK is supplying its customers with is biomethane; it is produced from anaerobic digestion plants across the country using biodegradable matter such as food waste, sewage, energy crops and residues from food manufacture.

Until now, Green Energy had supplied its customers with a mixture of conventional natural gas and renewable green gas but it can now offer its customers green gas and sustainable electricity as standard and at no extra cost. Green Energy UK’s dual fuel standard variable tariff is cheaper than British Gas, the UK’s biggest energy supplier.

Notes to Editors

  1. Green Energy UK is an independent, customer-owned licenced electricity and gas supplier to domestic and business customers throughout England, Scotland and Wales. It supplies sustainable energy and has been doing so since 2001. The company is headquartered in Ware, Hertfordshire.
  2. Biomethane provides a sustainable, flexible and economic solution that is predicted to make a significant contribution to the country’s heat demand. National Grid estimate biomethane can supply 5-18% of GB’s gas demand by 2020. It is also increasingly being used as a road fuel by trucks and buses both here and in Europe.
  3. A recent Renewable Energy Association survey, conducted in advance of Biomethane Day 2016 (to be held on April 20th), says that 84% of people in the UK would like to switch to using green gas in their homes.
  4. Green Energy’s supply of green gas is certified by the independent Green Gas Certification Scheme (GGCS) that tracks each unit of green gas through the supply chain to provide certainty for those that buy it. Each unit of green gas injected into the grid displaces a unit of conventional gas. The GGCS tracks the contractual rather than physical flows to ensure there is no double-counting from production to end use. The GGCS is run by the Renewable Energy Association’s subsidiary, Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd. http://www.greengas.org.uk
