National phone line for power cuts launched

A new national phone line has recently been launched for reporting of power cuts. The telephone number is 105 and assists people to contact the relevant person who manages electricity in their area.

When phoning the free service, the caller will be put through to their local network operator. This will help combat confusion as to the which organisation to contact. The service is funded by electricity network operators and is a first for the UK’s energy industry.

Its launch comes as a result of the recent finding by Energy Networks Association that 72% of respondents are unclear who to contact in the event of a power cut. 43% responded that they would contact their energy supplier.

David Smith, Chief Executive of ENA, said: “Significant network investment means power cuts are not a regular or widespread occurrence for people, however, our research makes it clear that there’s still a need to provide a simple, memorable number they can call should they experience one. This is particularly important when there’s bad weather, as severe storms can cause damage to power networks and disrupt the electricity supply into people’s homes. This new, free number will make life easier for electricity customers.” “ENA and electricity network operators across England, Scotland and Wales have worked in partnership to launch 105. We hope people will welcome it as an important step forward in helping electricity customers know exactly what to do and who to contact if they have a power cut.” Energy Minister, Baroness Neville-Rolfe, added: “For the first time, customers across the country will have a quick and simple way of getting information on power cuts affecting their households. It also allows the public to report any damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put themselves, or others at risk. 105 is a memorable number and you can also save it to your phone.”
