Green Energy Pinwheels

Our multi-coloured
energy

All our energy comes from 100% green sources.

It’s generated in weird and wonderful ways, it’s fun to
sell and that makes us happy.
Green Energy Colourful Facts - Jars

Five colourful facts about our energy:

One.
Our energy is sustainable and has minimal impact on the environment

Two.
100% of our gas is green (absolutely no carbon off-setting energy - just 100% green)

Three.
We champion energy made in the UK, supporting our economy

Four.
Our EKO Energy Tariff is independently certified, proving its high sustainability credentials

Five.
The production of our energy generates zero grams of radioactive waste

Want to buy energy that takes the meaning of ‘green’ even further?

Our EKO Energy Tariff is not only 100% renewable, but it also fulfils strict sustainability criteria.

about EKO Energy

Anaerobic Digestion

Turning waste into energy

Anaerobic digestion is a process where micro-organisms break down organic material in the absence of any oxygen to produce a methane and carbon dioxide-rich biogas. This can be burnt to produce energy, making good use of waste and preventing methane (a gas 20 times more toxic than CO2) leaking into the atmosphere. And what’s more, the nutrient-rich solids left after digestion can be handily used as a fertiliser!

We’re proud to say all our gas is 100% green!

100% green gas

Solar

Energy from 93 million miles away

A solar cell (or a ‘photovoltaic cell’ to you scientists out there) takes the light from the sun and converts it into electricity.

Wind

An invisible force

Our suppliers use the force of the wind to drive turbines, which in turn make electricity.

The energy generated for our EKO Energy Tariff means that our suppliers need to ensure that their wind farms are located away from bird migration paths – making it uber-environmentally friendly.

Biomass

That’s plants to you and me

Biomass is produced from organic material. We get this from plants, or from waste products from industry, agriculture - or your very own home. And then it gets turned into electricity. Clever stuff!

Hydro

Harnessing the Great British weather

Hydro-electricity takes the force of free-falling water and converts it into power. Some of our energy comes from small hydro-electric schemes in Scotland, Dorset and Cornwall.

We really do care about the impact even our green energy has on the environment. That’s why all the electricity for our EKO Energy Tariff is generated in locations where migrating fish are protected

our energy FAQs

What is your energy fuel mix?

Our gas

All our gas comes from a process known as Anaerobic Digestion - it is therefore 100% green.

Our electricity

Industry regulations require us to display our electricity fuel mix as per the table below. But put simply our electricity is 100% green too!

1st April 2019 - 31st March 2020

Green Energy UK fuel mix UK fuel mix
Coal 0% Coal 3.90%
Natural Gas 0% Natural Gas 39.40%
Nuclear 0% Nuclear 16.60%
Renewables 100% Renewables 37.90%
Other 0% Other 2.20%

And here is the environmental impact of our tariffs compared to the UK average

Green Energy UK fuel mix UK fuel mix
Carbon dioxide emissions 0.00g per kWh Carbon dioxide emissions 198g per kWh
High level radioactive waste 0.00000g per kWh High level radioactive waste 0.007g per kWh

Do you Carbon Offset your energy?

No, we don’t carbon offset any of our energy. Instead we focus our time on making sure our energy is generated in truly sustainable ways so it doesn’t need to be offset.

Whilst carbon offsetting schemes have done wonders to raise awareness of our impact on the environment, it’s not a ‘get out of jail free’ card. In other words, the use of carbon offsetting is not a free pass for inaction.

How can you prove your energy is 100% green?

For our electricity, we have a REGO certificate (Renewable Energy Guarantees Origin) for every MWh we supply.

For our gas, we have Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs).

The purpose of the certificates is to prove to the final customer that the energy was produced from renewable sources.

The electricity certification process is audited annually by Ofgem the regulator of the Energy Industry. And our gas is certified by the Green Gas Certification Scheme (and our EKO Energy Tariff is additionally certified as sustainable, by an independent ecolabel, EKOenergy.org)

Do you generate your own energy?

No we don’t. We have a wonderful network of independent commercial generators who generate our energy in weird and wonderful ways to meet the ever-growing demand for green and renewable energy across the UK. You can read more about our energy here.

I’ve heard that the generation of some green energy damages wildlife habitats. Does yours?

As the UK expands its ability to generate more and more green energy, these are the sorts of challenges our industry faces. Our EKO Energy Tariff has been independently certified to be generated in locations that protect bird and marine migrations and wildlife habitats. You can find out more about our EKO Energy Tariff here.

Can I buy just gas from you?

Not at the moment, no. We sell dual fuel (gas and electricity) or you can buy just electricity from us.
