EKOenergy is an international ecolabel for electricity and gas. Electricity sold with the EKOenergy label fulfils strict environmental criteria and raises funds for new renewable energy projects.
The label is a non-profit initiative of the EKOenergy Network, a group of dozens of environmental organisations from many different countries.
EKOenergy is renewable, green energy. To prove that, EKOenergy requires that the origin of the energy is reliably tracked.
Therefore, they only accept instruments that fulfil the quality criteria of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Scope 2 Guidance. In Europe, this has to happen via the Guarantees of Origin system, as regulated by European legislation.
EKOenergy is sustainably produced renewable energy. EKOenergy labelled energy must fulfil the sustainability criteria set by the EKOenergy Network:
Wind energy and solar energy can be sold as EKOenergy-ecolabelled electricity if the installations are located outside protected nature areas and outside important bird areas. The same rules apply to electricity from geothermal installations and from marine energy installations.
EKOenergy-labelled hydropower comes from installations that fulfil EKOenergy’s sustainability criteria. They safeguard a continuous flow, take into account fish migration and leave suitable habitats for aquatic species.
For biogas, EKOenergy only accepts fuel sourced from residues i.e. waste from agriculture or forestry rather than from energy crops (i.e. plants grown specifically for the purpose of biogas).
For bioenergy, EKOenergy only accepts the use of organic waste and woody biomass (excluding roots, stumps and large logs). At least 50% of the fuel used in the installation has to come from EKOenergy-eligible biowaste and only an equivalent proportion of that produced energy can be sold as EKOenergy. The bioenergy must also be used in installations with a minimum efficiency of 75%.
Using the EKOenergy label leads to real change. Through your demand for EKOenergy labelled energy, new installations are born where they are needed the most.
When you buy EKOenergy eco-labelled electricity or gas, a minimum of 0.10 € (ten eurocents) per MWh will go into their Climate Fund. In the case of hydropower, also to their Environmental Fund. This finances clean energy projects in remote communities of developing countries.
By choosing EKOenergy you effortlessly contribute to concrete change that wouldn’t happen otherwise.
All projects that EKOenergy finance are selected through a transparent process and contribute to the realisation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These climate projects are one of EKOenergy’s ways to ensure additionality, i.e. that your green power purchase leads to additional benefits.
The EKOenergy ecolabel is based on audits and verification made by national and regional authorities. If the necessary information is not available, an external independent auditor checks if EKOenergy’s requirements are fulfilled.
100% renewable: Only electricity from renewable sources can be sold as EKOenergy. To track the origin of the electricity, EKOenergy uses the European Guarantees of Origin system. EKOenergy certified gas is made from sustainable types of bioenergy or through the gasification of renewable electricity. It does not jeopardize food security or social justice.
Funding climate projects: EKOenergy suppliers pay at least 0,10 €/MWh into EKOenergy’s Climate Fund. This money is used to finance renewable energy projects all over the world.
Sustainable and nature friendly: EKOenergy sets strict sustainability criteria for power plants. For instance, they exclude controversial sources of bioenergy and windpower produced in important bird habitats. Hydropower can only be sold with their label after consultation with local environmental organisations.
Only 100% Green Gas sourced from waste: for biomethane gas, Green Energy UK’s EKO Energy, will only supply fuel sourced from waste i.e. waste from agriculture or forestry rather than from energy crops (i.e. plants grown specifically for the purpose of biomethane gas) and therefore does not jeopardise food security or social justice.
Safeguarding of marine habitats and fish migration: Green Energy UK’s EKOenergy– labelled hydropower will come from installations that safeguard a continuous flow of water safeguarding marine habitats, take into account fish migration and leave suitable habitats for aquatic species.
